Birchbox Review: August 2014

It's now six months since I've been subscribed to Birchbox, and regular readers will know that it's been something of a turbulent relationship. On the one hand, I've discovered some lovely products and got to try some brands I'd been eyeing up for a while; on the other, it's sometimes been a bit frustrating to keep getting the same types of products all the time. So I was intrigued about what I'd get this time out - would they be hits or misses?

The theme of the August Birchbox is Away We Go! and the products in this month's box are designed for holidays, day trips and weekends away. Firstly, I really like the usual packaging for this month's instalment - instead of the usual drawstring bag the products are in a clear plastic pouch. I love the bright summery yellow and green colour scheme and the fact it's clear and the size make it perfect for hand luggage when we go to New York for our honeymoon.

So what's inside the bag? Let's find out...

Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect
This is very timely as I am getting to the end of my current leave-in conditioner and find it really useful to help save time if I'm washing my hair before work. It has a nice if inoffensive smell and, when I used it with my hairdryer it dried nice and straight and tamed my frizz pretty well. I think this will be a good addition to my kit but not quite sure yet if I'd pay full price for it.

Wild About Beauty Creme Eyeshadow in 01 Olivia
This is a lovely nude cream eyeshadow with a hint of shimmer. I tend to wear a lot of these types of eyeshadow colours for work as they go with most things, so this will be a nice alternative for weekends or in hot weather. It is a bit tricky to apply but lasts very well - I got around six hours out of it without eyeshadow primer - so think I would definitely buy this again if I ever run out of eyeshadow.

Nude Progenius Omega Treatment Oil
I really like facial oils for the effect they have on my skin - the Clarins Lotus Oil has long been one of my favourites - so was excited to try this one. It sinks in really easily, smells nice and gives a nice boost to my skin. I can't quite put my finger on what's different but it just looks 'better', though as this one is designed for normal to dry skin and I'm more combination I'm not sure I'd buy another bottle.

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
I must admit I don't often use an exfoliator as I find they can be a bit harsh and make me break out, but this was actually really nice to use. The particles are quite fine so it doesn't feel too scratchy on my face, and I definitely felt like it made my skin look better, especially in terms of helping to clear my spot scars. It's not something I'd use every day but maybe a couple of times a week when I felt like my skin needed it.

Supergoop! Daily Correct SPF 35 CC Cream
Supergoop! is a brand that's been on my to-try list for a while, so I was very pleased to get this. It blends out nicely and sinks in quite quickly, although I didn't find it gave me a lot of coverage - but I only tend to wear BB or CC creams at weekends or when I'm having a home day so I don't mind that so much. I'm not quite sure about its claims to match your skin but it wasn't too dark for me and also lasted really well - I used it without primer and there were still traces when I removed it twelve hours later.

Sample chapter of The Proposal by Tasmina Perry
For an avid reader like me, a new book is always a pleasure and, whilst this isn't necessarily the type of book I'd have picked up in Waterstones, I actually really enjoyed it. It's the story of Amy, a dancer who gets dumped by her ambassador boyfriend in the run-up to Christmas and accepts a job as a companion to a woman visiting Amy's home town of New York. Perry does a great job of making you feel like you know the characters very quickly and even from just this opening chapter I found myself wanting to know more about Amy's life. More of these please Birchbox!

On balance I think I'll stick with Birchbox for a few months longer. I'm finding after a couple of duff boxes I'm a lot happier with this one and am getting more of the kinds of things I signed up to find - new nice products from brands I might have overlooked, in colours that I will use. Let's hope the boxes keep going from strength to strength!

Did you get the August Birchbox? What did you think?
